Diatomaceous Earth, also called Diatomite or fuller earth. It is a mineral of biogenetic origins; that is, algae skeletons deposited on the sea bed or bottom of lakes, or fossilised algae. Its structure varies according to the species of algae in question.

Since diatomaceous earth is a highly porous mineral of low density, it is used in agriculture to retain water. It is also an excellent carrier for certain insecticide and fungicide substances, since despite being chemically inert it creates a thin layer that covers the leaves, protecting plants from some piercing and sucking insects whose digestive and motor systems are atrophied due to the high silica content of diatomaceous earth.
